Mech Pilot - Callsign Goose!

I made this up last year in 2012 for fun & to brush up on my Hard Surface skills. Just getting around to showing him off now!

This is the low poly model captured realtime from my viewport in 3dsmax using the Xoliul shader.

Hes about 6500 tris and uses 2 x 1024 and 1 x 512 maps.

Created using Zbrush, 3dsmax & Photoshop.

How do you get such flawless bakes?

a lot of cleanup work after the bake man, raw bakes looks horrible / messy / dirty!

That would make sense. So like painting over the bakes in photoshop and the like? That's too bad, because there's a lot of maps that get generated so that's 4 times the work.

Is it possible to still generate good AO and other maps from an object-space normal map? If so, then you only have to clean up one map, right?

it depends really, you can separate the pieces and bake the ao this way - but you loose out on a few important shadows. Theres multiple ways to attack it but im still yet to find a way that actually works fast and clean.

Yeah, AO is really my concern, since you can break up a model for normal maps and not miss out on anything. It may be possible to explode a model to do a detail AO, and then generate a simple AO from the lowpoly combined mesh, and just overlay that. It just might do the trick, but I'll have to try it myself.
Not that I'll have the chance to try for a while since I'm doing environments this project.
